Motion Graphics Fundamentals in After Effects
Before you open After Effects and start moving layers, understand that motion graphics isn't animating shapes — it's visual storytelling with rules.
1. Timing
Motion that feels "natural" is actually engineered to the millisecond. Any element moving at a constant speed looks artificial.
- Short motion (0.2s–0.4s) — feels fast and energetic
- Medium motion (0.4s–0.8s) — main transitions
- Long motion (over 1s) — dramatic or calm pacing
2. Easing — the natural touch
- Ease Out — starts fast, slows down
- Ease In — starts slow, accelerates
- Ease In-Out — smoothest, for mid transitions
- Overshoot — goes past then returns
Golden rule: never leave a motion linear unless you have a clear reason.
3. Disney's 12 principles
- Squash & Stretch
- Anticipation
- Follow Through
- Secondary Action
Tools are secondary. Ideas and timing make the difference.
